Today’s Miracle Moment Is About the Hidden Energy Leaks Draining Your Joy…

Have you ever felt drained, scattered, or weighed down… even when nothing particularly difficult is happening? Sometimes it isn’t one big thing stealing your joy. It’s the little things you haven’t dealt with.

The overflowing inbox. The cluttered closet. The conversation you keep avoiding. The financial loose end you don’t want to look at. The promise you made to yourself that you haven’t kept.

I call these hidden energy leaks, or unfinished things that quietly take up space in your mind, your emotions, and your life.

And while you can’t control everything happening in the world that might trigger anxiety, stress, or fear, you can begin reclaiming the energy that’s being drained by these incompletions.

When you do, you create more space for joy, peace, possibility and miracles.

What Is an Energy Leak?

An energy leak is an area of your life that continually drains your attention or emotional energy. Often, it’s something you’ve been procrastinating about.

You know that feeling when you think about something unfinished and immediately feel yourself contract? Maybe it feels like a weight on your shoulders. Maybe you feel a little pang of guilt, worry, frustration, or regret. So you push it away.

That may feel better temporarily, but the incompletion is still there, quietly occupying some of your energy.

Research on procrastination suggests that we sometimes put things off as a form of short-term mood repair. In other words, avoiding something uncomfortable can help us feel better in the moment. But that relief doesn’t necessarily last. The unfinished task is still waiting for us.

That’s why clearing an energy leak can feel so liberating. You’re not simply checking something off your to-do list. You’re releasing something that has been taking up valuable inner space.

How to Clear Energy Leaks Without Being Hard on Yourself

Here’s something important: Clearing your energy leaks isn’t about forcing yourself to finally “get it together.” In fact, quite the opposite.

The things we avoid are often connected to uncomfortable emotions. That means the most powerful approach combines practical action with self-compassion.

Financial therapist Bari Tessler, who has been a guest expert in our Your Year of Miracles program, teaches a beautiful approach to working with money that can also inspire how we handle other kinds of energy leaks.

Instead of making an uncomfortable task feel like punishment, create an environment that feels supportive.

  • Put on your favorite music
  • Make yourself a delicious cup of tea, cacao or chai
  • Light that candle you’ve been saving for a special occasion
  • Use essential oils like lavender, sandalwood, or jasmine
  • Take a movement break: dance with your furry friends in the kitchen, take a walk around the block, or do a yoga pose or two

And if emotions arise while you’re taking action, allow yourself to notice them rather than pushing them away. Where do you feel that emotion in your body? What does it need from you?

You can tend to yourself and take the practical next step.

With that spirit of kindness, here are five places to look for hidden energy leaks in your own life.

1. Physical Space Energy Leaks

Your physical environment affects how you feel.

Maybe there’s a faucet that has been dripping for months and quietly driving you crazy. A closet overflowing with clothes you never wear or even regret you purchased. A stack of mail you keep meaning to sort through.

Or perhaps it’s that corner. You know the one! Mine is in the hallway. Every time you walk past it, some part of you thinks, “I really need to deal with that.”

That’s an energy leak!

Try blocking out even 20-30 minutes to give one area of your home some tender loving care. Put on music, invite a friend to help if that would make it easier, and start letting things go.

You don’t need to organize your entire house. Simply choose one space and notice how different you feel afterward.

When you shift the energy in your space, you may be surprised by how much it shifts the energy in you.

2. Digital Energy Leaks

Digital clutter may be less visible than physical clutter, but it can still feel surprisingly draining.

Is your inbox overflowing with unread messages? Are there hundreds of files sitting on your desktop? Do you have old accounts you keep meaning to close?

I once had about 3,000 unread emails sitting in my inbox and I didn’t realize how much energy that was taking until I dealt with them.

Consider giving yourself a little digital clearing session.

Make some tea, put on your favorite music, and get into the flow of deleting, filing, unsubscribing, and organizing.

You don’t need to reach “inbox zero.” The goal is simply to reclaim some of the energy that digital clutter has been quietly consuming.

3. Relationship Energy Leaks

Some of our biggest energy leaks happen in relationships. Maybe there’s a conversation you know you need to have with your best friend.

Perhaps you’ve lost touch with a sibling or someone you care about. Or there’s an old hurt that still needs forgiveness or healing from the past.

These energy leaks deserve particular tenderness.

You don’t necessarily have to jump straight into a difficult conversation. Your first step may be internal.

  • Journal about what feels incomplete.
  • Try a forgiveness practice.
  • Ask yourself what you need in order to feel more at peace.
  • Or simply reach out and say hello to someone you’ve been meaning to reconnect with.

The question is: Where is there something incomplete in one of your relationships that is quietly asking for your attention?

4. Financial Energy Leaks

Money can carry a lot of emotional charge, which makes financial loose ends especially easy to avoid.

Perhaps there’s an old savings account that your parents opened for you when you graduated high school you need to close. Maybe there’s money you borrowed from your cousin that you haven’t addressed.

Or there’s a debt or financial task you keep putting off because looking at it feels uncomfortable.

Remember, you don’t necessarily have to solve the entire situation today. If you can’t repay a debt immediately, for example, you might simply acknowledge it and create a plan. That alone is movement.

Approach your finances with compassion rather than judgment and ask:

What is one financial loose end I could begin resolving today?

Sometimes the simple act of facing what we’ve been avoiding can bring an enormous sense of relief.

5. Self-Promise Energy Leaks

This final energy leak is one we don’t always recognize. It’s the promises we’ve made to ourselves.

Maybe you decided you were going take up pickleball. Meditate every morning. Start that creative project or launch a store on Etsy. Take your first trip out of the country that you’ve been thinking about for years.

And then… you didn’t.

Those abandoned promises can linger in the background, quietly making us feel as though we’ve let ourselves down.

Here’s what I invite you to do instead:

  1. Make a list of the promises you’ve made to yourself over the past several months or even the past year.
  2. Then look at each one with fresh eyes.
  3. Ask, “Do I still genuinely want this?”

If the answer is no, consciously release it. You are allowed to change your mind.

If the answer is yes, create a new intention that fits who you are and what your life looks like now.

Instead of carrying around an old promise, you’re making a conscious choice. And that can free up a tremendous amount of energy.

Start With Just One Energy Leak

Now that you know these five common energy leaks, you may be tempted to tackle them all.

Please don’t!

That can quickly turn a beautiful practice of self-care into another overwhelming project.

Instead, choose one:

  • Your physical space (maybe the closet in the spare room)
  • Your digital world (that overflowing email inbox comes to mind)
  • A relationship (one that needs some boundaries or some sweet nurturing)
  • Your finances (asking for help with reconciling your bank account)
  • A promise to yourself (making a change for the better)

Bring your attention and care to that one area. Take one small step toward completion and notice what happens to your energy.

Because every incompletion you lovingly address creates a little more room for what you do want.

More peace, joy, flow, possibility, and more of those beautiful synchronicities that make it feel as though the wind is at your back and the universe is working in your favor.

That’s what I call Living in the Miracle Zone.
