Today’s Miracle Moment Is About When Things Don’t Go Your Way…
Life has a way of throwing us curveballs.
A breakup you didn’t see coming.
A health scare that shakes your sense of safety.
An unexpected bill that makes your stomach drop.
In those moments, it’s almost automatic to hear that inner voice say:
Why is this happening to me? This isn’t fair. How could this go so wrong?
But what if—right in the middle of what feels like a breakdown—you’re missing something deeply important?
What if there’s a soul lesson trying to get your attention… especially when life doesn’t go according to plan?
The Hidden Gift Inside Life’s “Bad Luck”
When something painful or unexpected happens, our minds rush to label it as bad, wrong, or unfair. And once we’re caught in that story, it’s easy to feel powerless or stuck.
But there’s another way to look at it—one that has been a true lifeline for me during moments when my life felt like it was falling apart and I couldn’t see a way forward.
There’s an old teaching story about a farmer whose horse runs away. His neighbors say, “What terrible luck.” The farmer simply replies, “Good luck, bad luck—who knows?”
A week later, the horse returns with a herd of wild mares. “What great luck!” they say.
Again, the farmer replies, “Who knows?”
Soon after, the farmer’s son breaks his leg trying to tame one of the horses. “Such bad luck!”
“Who knows?” the farmer says.
Not long after, a war breaks out and all the young men are sent away—except the farmer’s son, whose broken leg keeps him home.
So was it good luck or bad luck?
Who knows. Life was still unfolding.
When You Judge the Moment, You Miss the Wisdom
When we immediately judge what’s happening as bad or wrong, we often close ourselves off from movement, clarity, and growth.
But when we stay open—when we allow for the possibility that something meaningful is unfolding—we move through life with more grace and ease.
One powerful question to try on is this:
“The Universe loves me. What’s the lesson or gift in this?”
This doesn’t mean denying your feelings. Pain is real. Disappointment is real. Fear is real.
It simply means you don’t have to stay trapped in a story that keeps you stuck.
Why Things Sometimes Have to Fall Apart
Here’s where this gets even more interesting.
In nature, there’s something called the self-organizing principle. It means that systems naturally reorganize themselves without being controlled—but first, they often have to break down.
A perfect example is a forest fire.
From the outside, it looks like total devastation. But within weeks, new growth appears. New species emerge—plants that couldn’t survive in the old, overcrowded forest.
The ecosystem doesn’t rebuild itself the same way.
It reorganizes into something more alive, more vibrant, and more resilient.
The same principle shows up in our lives.
Think about a creative project. Often, the breakthrough comes after you’ve felt stuck, confused, or convinced it’s not working.
Or a relationship that deepens only after a difficult season where you didn’t see eye to eye.
What looks like a breakdown on the outside is often a reorganization on the inside.
You Are Not the General Manager of the Universe
The challenge is that we don’t always trust this intelligence at work.
Instead, we try to control everything as if we know exactly how life should unfold.
I know I’ve done this. And I have a friend who lovingly reminds me when I’m gripping too tightly:
“Marci, you are not the general manager of the Universe.”
She’s right. None of us are.
There’s an old Yiddish proverb that says, “Man plans, and God laughs.” Life is constantly recalibrating us toward growth in ways we couldn’t design on our own.
The moment you stop fighting what’s happening and start trusting it, you give that deeper intelligence room to work.
Three Ways to Work With Life Instead of Against It
If you’re moving through a challenging season right now, here are three gentle practices that can help you align with what’s unfolding instead of resisting it.
1. Make it a Daily Practice to Look for the Good
Every day, notice what’s working—even in the middle of difficulty.
What you place your attention on grows stronger. When you train yourself to look for the good, you naturally invite more of it into your experience.
2. Notice the Story You’re Telling Yourself
When something happens that you instantly label as “bad,” pause and listen to the story you’re creating about it.
Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?”
Try asking, “If this were happening for a higher purpose, what might that be?”
Empowering questions open empowering possibilities.
3. Set the Intention That Everything Serves Your Highest Good
Your words—and your intentions—carry tremendous power.
Set the intention that everything unfolding in your life be used for your highest good. Then notice what shifts when you stop resisting and start trusting.
When Life Doesn’t Go According to Plan
Even when things feel messy, uncertain, or disappointing, there is an intelligence at play—one that knows how to reorganize your life in ways you may not yet see.
Sometimes things fall apart not to punish you…
…but to make room for something more aligned to emerge.
And when you stay open to that possibility, you may discover that what once felt like a setback was actually a turning point.
